Wedged like a grape between Brazil’s gargantuan thumb and Argentina’s long forefinger, Uruguay is South America’s smallest country. we decided to go to Colonia because we were told it was a smaller and more charming town. They were right. We are staying at a hotel in old town which is an UNESCO sight . Great hotel, Hotel Italiano, perfect location with an indoor and outdoor pool. However, you will see many fashion don'ts in the pool area. The streets are cobble stone and the restaurants are small and inviting. People gather at the point to watch the sunset (9:05 pm) and it was breath taking. Very happy we put this on the itinerary. The exchange is $1 US =25 Ur. They will take US dollars or AR pesos. PS Anne and I have agreed not to post pictures of ourselves..........we have looked better.

We got an early start and left Buenos Aires for the ferry to Colonia, Uruguay ( the country that feels a need for three U's) We took only two days clothes and left our luggage in BA.

La Bourgogne
Tonight I had the best dining experience I have ever had. We went to a four star French restaurant called La Bourgogne in a very upscale area of Buenos Aries. We walked the area and visited some of the shops.....window shopping only. Our reservation was at 7:30 and we left at 10:00. The meal was formidabla!
On another note AL has gotten blonder. It is sad when I am the responsible adult. She has lost her bus pass, can't find her pills ( I am in for trouble on that one) gave the taxi driver a piece of paper with an address on it AND all her passwords to her credit cards. Why they were on the same paper , I don't know. It's getting interesting. I predict only one of us will return.

The MALBA
We went to a great art museum today. MALBA where there was a special exhibit on the artist Antonio Berni. He was a mixed media artist with some great work with a social statement. I think he may have been a communist. There were also a few other South American artist feature such as Frita (unibrow) kahlo. As played by Salma Hayak. Frita was known for her self portraits. She said she did so many self portraits because she was often alone. Her picture explains why that was.

Day one has been long. We arrived in Buenos Aires at 7 am which was actually 5am EST. BA's longitude is east of the US so they are ahead of us time wise. Entering the country was very easy, however they are very strick on the entry fee and we had to show proof that we had paid it in advance several times during our trip. We had a car waiting for us to take us in to the city which I recommend doing. One less hassle. The cost was $60 for about a half hour ride. We are staying at a small, clean minimalist hotel in the center of BA. It is fine so far but AL hasn't started snoring yet. We have booked a trip to Uruguay for Friday, Sat. And Sun. And booked a flight to Mendoza for Monday. The exchange is one dollar equals 8.5 pesos so the math has been a challenge. I quess knowing long division can be useful. We took a tourist bus around the city to get our bearings and will see more tomorrow. My vivofit reads 19073. I hope your reading this Kate.
